Explanation of the Class Schedule and levels of dance classes:
At Kehl School of Dance, we offer a variety of classes for dancers of differing ages, abilities, and interests.
Preschool Classes: Have a dancer who can’t wait to start?
Tiny Tots and Imagination-Music are our programs for 2 year olds!
The following classes are for ages 3 but are not yet in 5 year old Kindergarten:
- Pre-Ballet is a 30 minute ballet class designed for preschoolers. Level 1 is for three year old’s who may be turning four during the school year. Level 2 is for four year old’s who may be turning five during the school year. This class runs from September through May. Dancers learn a dance to perform in our Spring Recital held in early May.
- Fairytale Ballet is a short session class. It may be 6, 8 or 10 weeks long. This 45 minute class is the perfect introduction to dance. The instructor reads a short story and helps the students dress in costumes that relate to the story. Together they dance through the story line and present a short dance for parents and caregivers to watch during the last 5 minutes of class.
- Mini Hip Hop is a fast paced 30 minute short session class that meets for 8-10 weeks. This class is geared toward 3-4 year old dancers.
- Imagination Music has various classes focused on inspiring creativity and exploring music and rhythm. The class structure includes singing, finger play, music recognition and rhythm instruments. The class is taught by an instructor with a Masters degree in music from the UW-Madison.
How do you know if your child is ready for a structured dance class? Our decades of experience show that children who are potty trained are also ready for a class with structure and have less anxiety leaving their parent to attend a class.
Recreational Division -School Aged Classes: (School Year Program- meets once per week, September – May)
All classes perform in our Spring Recital in May.
For school aged dancers 5K – 12th grade, we offer classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical and Hip Hop. Class placement is based on both grade (going into) and experience.
Kindergarten or 1st grade- students start with a ballet/tap combo class, which will have only 1 costume, but participate in a ballet and a tap dance. Also, available are Pre-Jazz and Hip Hop.
Grades 2-5 – Choose a class based on grade level. Beginning classes will be labelled Beginning. Classes do not come as a package, allowing for flexibility in choosing the right classes for your dancer. You will find they are always grouped back-to-back on the schedule. Classes offered are Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Acro. There are competitive opportunities available.
Grades 5+- Choose a class based on grade level. Classes labeled Int. or Teen assume some dance experience. Classes offered are Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Lyrical.
Students in grades 3 through 12 can choose between continuing on in our Recreational Division (classes by grade) or they may enter our Dance Focus Division (see below).
All classes in the school year program learn a dance and perform in our Spring Recital in early May.
Dance Focus Classes: (School Year Program – dance classes twice per week)
We offer Dance Focus classes to those dancers entering 3rd grade and higher. These classes come with a greater commitment to dance and higher expectations of regular attendance and training. In our Dance Focus program, dancers attend classes twice per week. On one day they take a 60 minute non-performing Ballet Technique class. This class teaches correct posture, terminology, body awareness and alignment as well as artistry in the execution of movement. On another day, students attend performance classes, including the Ballet, Jazz and Tap classes which perform in the recital. We find that this program is the best way for our dancers in grades 3 and up to reach their full potential while learning more advanced skills.
Dance Focus classes are by level (skills learned in earlier levels are required for next level) and by grade.
Classes are grouped together on the schedule.
For example, Dance Focus 1 Ballet, Tap, Jazz go with Ballet Tech level 1. (Ballet Tech is required).
Dancers progress through levels 1,2,3 and 4, with 4 being the pre-pointe level for ballet. After level 4, dancers usually progress into Pointe level 1, 2, etc.
Dance Focus class levels are: DF 1, 2, 3, 4, Pointe 1, Pointe 2, and Advanced.
