As dancers advance, they should include some tumbling in their repretoire. Rolls, handstands, cartwheels, walkovers are some of the skills taught by experienced instructors. Younger dancers begin with Dance and Tumble.
Ballet is the fundamental for all dance. Ballet provides the basis for all forms of dance and should be taken first, or concurrently with tap. Ballet encourages proper technique, posture and muscular strength. Dancers are introduced to the positions and names of dance steps.
Younger dancers start with movement, which includes gross and fine motor skill development, and move at a faster pace. We use fun songs they may know. Classes are generally 30 minutes and designed to be combined with tap. As they get older, dancers are introduced to “barre” work, which provides the basic warm-up used by all dancers, including professionals. Classes labeled Ballet incorporate technical skills and performance skills, and perform a ballet dance designed to highlight the skills they have learned that year.

Ballet Technique (Dance Focus Program)
Ballet Technique is a class for aspiring dancers who wish to develop an accomplished understanding of dance movement. Ballet technique classes are one hour to one and a half hours in length and meet once a week. Technique classes are designed to be taken in addition to their regular ballet class, on a different day. We feature a graduated level program of study based on Russian/European methodology in our approach to teaching, stressing precision, competence and elegance of movement. All of our ballet technique instructors are highly trained in these methods. Ballet technique classes do not perform in the annual recital.
Is ballet a little too “slow” for your child? Hip Hop for young dancers blends a little hip hop and creative movement. Your dancer will be rockin’ and rollin’! Each session is a different theme. Perfect for boys and girls.
Dance attire is encouraged, so children feel like “they are going to dance class”.
We offer a package which includes a high quality cotton and lined leotard, soft and stretchy tights, and quality leather ballet shoes for $37 including tax. Jazz shoes may also be worn. Boys can wear stretch pants and T-shirt.
A fusion of dance styles designed to be creative and expressive. Ranging from athletic to theatrical to soft and beautiful, this type of dance is showcased weekly on “So You Think You Can Dance”. Our contemporary/lyrical classes require an understanding of basic jazz and ballet terminology.
Dance and Tumble
This NEW program introduces children to both dance and gymnastics. Learn the basics of ballet/creative dance and tumbling in one fun class! Classes are 45 minutes in length. Footless tights or bare legs and a leotard on the body required.
Not sure what type of dance your child will enjoy? Dance sampler includes it all! Class begins with an introduction to ballet terms and concepts. In the “jazz” portion of class, dancers move to popular music learn to put steps together. We then put on tap shoes (provided by Kehls) and explore the rhythm and fun of tap dance.
This short session does not perform in our annual recital, so there are no costume fees, or school year commitment. Dancer will need to wear leotard, tights and leather ballet slippers to class to facilitate the changing of shoes and the movement. Check out our new student dance wear packages!
Dance Focus Programs
Experienced dancers may apply for our Dance Focus programs in Ballet, Tap and Jazz. The dance focus program is designed for dancers who wish to progress at a more serious and rapid pace. All Dance Focus students are required to take a Ballet Technique class in addition to their Ballet/Tap/Jazz program. Please call for more information.
Young students ages 3 to 5 will learn the joys of dance through connections with Fairytale stories and their characters. The class begins by creating a scene from a famous fairytale. Using props and music, the students will explore dance movement in a fun, unique environment. Fairytales include Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and many more. We have special boy costumes and characters!
Fairytale Ballet students come once per week. Each class explores a different Fairytale/popular children’s story lasting 45 minutes. This is a perfect first-dance experience!
Fairytale Ballet instructors are specially trained to engage pre-school age children in a structured activity. We recommend students are potty-trained as a sign of maturity. This could be the incentive they need!!
Parents are encouraged to watch through our observation windows/monitors. At the end of the class, family members are invited in so students can show their costumes and excerpts from their experience. Bring your camera!
Female dancers will need to wear a basic leotard (no skirt), tights to cover their legs, and leather-bottom ballet shoes. We will be putting different costumes over this basic attire each class. You are encouraged to purchase a special student package we offer which includes a high quality cotton and lined leotard, soft and stretchy tights, and quality leather ballet shoes for $37 including tax. (All pink available, of course!). Male dancers should wear a white tee shirt and tight fitting sweatpants/leggings and black ballet shoes.
Learn the latest funk moves. Rhythm, coordination and body isolations are the focus of this fast-paced class. Get your middle school and high school age kids engaged in some fun exercise! Great for learning school dance team moves. Turns, leaps and tradition dance moves are learned with an emphasis on the hip hop genre and appropriate music.
Kehl instructors attend conventions to learn the latest and greatest hip hop! Is Hip Hop your thing? Join one of our competition Hip Hop Crews! Kehl Hip Hop crew 2014 15
Jazz is a high-energy form of dance set to popular music. The fundamentals of jazz involve body isolations, jumps, leaps, turns, lots of fun and exercise!
Dancers can begin jazz in 2nd grade. The reason we ask that dancers are a little older, is that in order to be able to do real jazz, dancers must have the muscular development to isolate different parts of their body.
Students are grouped by age and experience. We use age-appropriate, popular music for each group. Classes begin at 30 minutes per week, and are designed to be combined with ballet and/or tap back to back.
Experienced jazz dancers are invited to audition for our Dance Teams! Dance teams perform and compete different styles of jazz dancing each year. Dancers must be in at least 3rd grade to audition. See Dance Teams section for more information.
Designed for students interested in expanding their theater opportunities to feel comfortable auditioning for Theater roles that might include dance. This class covers basic jazz and tap steps, including terminology, technique and styles, commonly found in Broadway Musical productions. Students will perform at the end of the session.
Pre-Ballet / Pre-Ballet 2
Boys and girls ages 3 – 5 will enjoy a creative dance program, which introduces them to the concepts of structured movement to music. Children learn basic dance steps such as pointing toes, creating “positions”, and learning steps to music.
Kehl School of Dance has been the pioneer of the classic pre-ballet program, which we have been perfecting for over 100 years. Our pre-ballet instructors are specially trained to engage pre-school age children in a structured program. For many dancers, this is their first “class” experience. Our instructors are patient, friendly and experienced. (We do not have student-age teachers)
Pre-ballet promotes creativity and self-confidence, as well as coordination and spatial awareness. We sing and dance our way around the room, learn to take turns and work with partners, work on skipping, jumping, balance, and some graceful movements too.
Female dancers will need to wear a basic leotard (short skirt OK), tights to cover their legs, and leather ballet shoes. You are encouraged to purchase a special student package we offer which includes a high quality cotton and lined leotard, soft and stretchy pink tights, and quality leather ballet shoes for $37 including tax. (All pink available, of course!). Dancers will need these tights and shoes for the performance. Male dancers should wear a white tee shirt and tight fitting sweatpants/leggings and black ballet shoes.
Pointe (Dance Focus Program)
“Pointe” class is performed wearing special pointe shoes and is for experienced ballet dancers only. Special pointe preparation classes are offered during the summer to prepare students for pointe work. Students are evaluated beginning at age 11, must complete at least 2 years of technical ballet technique training and demonstrate technical competence.
Our highly trained instructors guide each student on a special journey into the world of ballet with a program designed to take dancers to the pre-professional level if desired.
Dancers and parents are encouraged to schedule an appointment with one of our instructors to learn more about this special experience and it’s requirements.
Sitting Ballet is for anyone with limited ability to stand who wants to learn ballet and build strength in their upper body. Classes are open to dancers who use assistive devices, which could include a walker or a wheelchair. Some dancers take class sitting on a furniture “cube.” Class participants should have upper body mobility.
Similar to Kehl’s other ballet classes, Sitting Ballet technique is taught using French terminology. Arm movements are the same as in traditional Ballet. Some movements standing dancers do with their legs are done using the arms. Classes are available for adults and children.
Tap dance is performed wearing special “tap” shoes. Tap has fun names such as “Buffalo” and Maxi Ford”, and students learn the “real” tap terminology. Students learn basic tap steps and put them together in exciting combinations using high-energy music. Tap is a special type of dance, which encourages development of musicality and promotes coordination, especially with the feet. Great for soccer players!
Dancers can begin Tap at Kindergarten age. We recommend taking ballet with tap, but it is not required.
Kehl’s has a very strong tap program with exciting choreography and two award-winning performance tap teams, the Footlights and the Tel-Tones. See the Dance Team section for more information.
Certified instructors take kids from their first poses to a lifestyle of health and wellbeing. Mats provided.
